"Journey to Jhomolhari: A Challenging Hike to a Magnificent Peak"

The nature retreat to Jhomolhari was one of the toughest hikes I've ever done. Known as the "Bride of Kangchenjunga," Jhomolhari is a stunning peak located on the border between Tibet and Bhutan, standing at an impressive 7,326 meters. We embarked on this incredible journey from May 12th to 17th, 2024. This experience was not just a physical challenge but also an opportunity to connect deeply with nature and the majestic landscapes of Bhutan. Our adventure began with an 8-hour trek to our first basecamp, Thang Thangkha. In our local Dzongkha language, "Thang" means a small plain area, which is how Thang Thangkha got its name.

After spending the night at Thang Thangkha, we embarked on a 6-hour hike to the Jhomolhari base camp. This beautiful spot, called Jangothang, offers breathtaking views of the magnificent Jhomolhari mountain right from your tent. Near the campsite, there is a ruin of a large structure. Curious about its history, I asked our horseman and guide, Azha Changlo, about the name and significance of the campsite. In the video below, you'll learn about the significance of the place and some history about the people who once lived there. Also posted on my YouTube channel.

The base camp is also called Chorten Karpoi Thang, which means "the plain with white stupas as shown in the picture below.

Finally, this is a time-lapse video of Jhomolhari. When we arrived at the base camp, the mountain was hidden by clouds. We hoped to see it the next morning, and I was excited about the possibility of seeing it right from my tent. I picked the best spot to film and woke up at 4:30 am to capture this footage. There is someone in the video who didn't realize I was filming, but I decided to keep it and added the song "Gangkar Jhomolhari" to the clip. The song is from a Bhutanese feature film titled "Lengo," and it's where I first heard the name Jhomolhari when I was in high school. I hope to take my son there one day to experience the beauty of Jhomolhari and visit the spectacular mountain again.
